Vegamour's Expansion in China Fuels Job Growth in Southern California and Across the U.S.

Vegamour, a plant-based hair wellness brand headquartered in Los Angeles, is making significant inroads into the Chinese market through its partnership with Alibaba.

Selling to Chinese consumers on Alibaba has propelled Vegamour’s growth. The company has grown from a four-person team in 2016 to a hundred-plus people today, with over $150 million in annual sales.

“Being successful in China is crucial to our strategy in terms of establishing ourselves as a global brand,” says Dan Hodgdon, Vegamour’s Founder and Chairman. “The access to the Chinese market that Alibaba provides creates substantial employment opportunities within our U.S. company. You’re talking about the second-largest market economy in the world. It has a ripple effect: the greater the demand, the more jobs we can create to meet that demand.”

In 2021, Vegamour initiated its soft launch in China by leveraging Alibaba’s overseas fulfillment program, which offers local warehouses for direct delivery to Chinese consumers. Over the past two years, the brand has steadily expanded its presence on Alibaba’s e-commerce platforms and now boasts a global flagship store on Tmall Global with access to more than one billion potential customers in China.

Consumer demand from Chinese customers is having a positive impact on the local community in California as well as the broader U.S. economy. According to research conducted by NDP Analytics, American brands like Vegamour selling on Alibaba contributed over $47 billion to the U.S. economy in 2021, supporting 390,000 American jobs and $31 billion in wages.
