A recent study conducted by NDP Analytics revealed the significant economic impact of Alibaba’s e-commerce platform on Michigan. The study found that U.S. sales on Alibaba added $822 million to the state’s GDP in one year, supporting 8,700 jobs and generating $658 million in wages.
When iconic American brand Bissell, based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, sought to enter the China marketplace, it relied on consumer insights from Alibaba to plan its global expansion. As a result, the company saw a significant boost in online sales. Today, Bissell’s products reach hundreds of thousands of Chinese consumers through its flagship store on Alibaba’s Tmall marketplace. “Selling on Alibaba has been a game changer,” said Max Bissell, President Global Markets & Wash, Bissell Homecare, Inc.
American interior design brand Herman Miller also established a home on Alibaba’s online marketplace. The Zeeland, Michigan-based furniture company, known for its ergonomic chairs, partnered with Alibaba in 2013 as an experiment. Ten years later, the online marketplace, which reaches over one billion consumers, is integral to its global business.
“Growth in China is really important for our company overall. And the best place to see all of our products and the whole brand proposition is on Alibaba’s online marketplace,” Eric Ishii-Eckhard, Director of Digital, APMEA, at Herman Miller, expressed.
